General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

0
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will enter into force on May 25th, 2018. It is imposed on the countries of the European Union and concerns all data related to the activity of an individual. This law encourages organizations and companies to be more vigilant about the exploitation of personal data.

Here’s an introductory video that will help you better understand how this general data protection regulation affects you:

We are pleased to announce that our website, Fit for Life, now implements the necessary changes required by this law! By using all our services and related sites, we guarantee you an experience in accordance with this new regulation. This means among other things that the registration, usage, and processing of your personal data will be processed in accordance with this law.

Of course, we haven’t waited for the arrival of this regulation to consider your privacy with the utmost care; it is something that has always been important to us. By giving us your trust, we want to assure you back a level of guarantee against any abuse.

Changes Made to the Website

In accordance with these regulations, we are pleased to announce:

  • The implementation of a new privacy policy, which addresses the following points:
    • The principles of data protection
    • The rights concerning your data
    • The data that we collect
    • The usa of your personal data
    • The access to your data
    • The protection of your data
    • The management of cookies
  • The creation of a user dashboard for managing your data
    • This allows you to control the information that we have at your disposal, and request the deletion of such data at any time.
  • Redesign of our back-end to accommodate what this regulation requires.

Please take five minutes to review our privacy policy, this will help you better understand how we handle your personal data. In addition, do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding the processing of your data.

While we want to offer you a pleasant and customized experience, we also want to ensure the safety of your data. At this point, you can download all the data we have about you, and on simple request, download and consult your data. This tool will also assist you in exporting your data to another provider, as needed.

What do you mean by user data?

Well … that’s all the information we have about you. For example, when you leave us a message, we record your name, e-mail address, and message. If you have shown interest in our coaching offers, we keep the information you have provided us. Of course, we are against any abuse, regardless of this new law.

For example, without your explicit consent, we do not add you information to our emailing list! This consent is very important to us, and it means that:

  • You fully understand the use we make of your data.
  • You give us your confidence in using your data.
  • You understand that you have the possibility, at any time, to retract.

We do our best to follow the regulation and keep up with the latest technical innovations to ensure the safety of our service. This includes data encryption (where possible), and anonymization.

Note about our marketing strategy

Marketing allows us to better understand your needs, however, we are opposed to the distribution of your personal data. We privilege the anonymization of data, because we want to respect your privacy. We also do our best to offer you quality content, as far as your privacy is concerned.

Fit for Life and Linked Sites

Our main website, Fit for Life, currently implements all measures, as defined by regulation. All related websites (sales platform, Q & A, and coaching site) will gradually implement all the measures required by the regulations. However, that does not mean that we will be abusing your privacy through our other websites.

Quite the contrary. We already have implemented a lot of features to respect your privacy. However, there is still a little work to ensure that the required changes are implemented properly. In practice, when you use our linked sites, we treat your data identically, so no worries.

Here is the schedule for implementing the GDPR framework across all our websites.

Milestone Date
Implementing the necessary changes and updating the code Last week of May
Consolidation of our privacy policy Done (May, the 20th 2018)
Mise en place d’une gestion des cookies avec affichage d’une bannière Last week of May
Cookies management in accordance with the GDPR End of May
User data encryption End of May
Misc. (design, etc.) First week of June

Our Opinion

Well … we have mixed feelings. On the one hand, we welcome the European initiative, which makes it possible to better protect citizens against abuses (which are numerous), in particular by setting up a unified policy, which concerns more than European societies and citizens. This forces the giants (Google among many others) to submit to stricter regulations.

However, this new law requires a lot of work, and may compromise small e-commerce or websites, which do not have the means or expertise to properly implement the changes required. These small (and often honest people) risk a set of penalties (up to 20 million Euros in fines!!), which does not seem completely justified. Indeed, if this regulation requires the implementation of a set of measures, the European Union will punish those who do not submit to it.

But that does not mean that those who do not implement it not are guilty of abusing your private data. It is therefore a policy that assumes that everyone is guilty in failing to comply fully with this regulation.

For any question, do not hesitate to leave a comment.
